LPG ATV - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who will be responsible for training warranty information and technical support of the conversion equipment?

A: The latest bi-fuel kits have been developed by Taylor and Braithwaite, Dyke Nook, Sandford, Appleby, Cumbria, CA16 6NS. Tel 017683 41400.
E-Mail: paul@t-and-b.co.uk. The contact is Paul Taylor.

Q: What happens if I run out of LPG?

A: As the ATV is bi-fuel, with the flick of a switch it can be changed to run on LPG or petrol to ensure you do not run out of fuel. Customers using ATV gas bikes have found that getting into the habit of refilling the bike when they return to base at lunch and/or in the evenings, prevents run-outs occurring.

Q: How do I know how much gas is in the bulk tank?

A: There is a gauge under the cover of the bulk tank and the fitter will explain how to read this gauge, as well as how to fill the ATV’s on-board tank. However, Calor LPG bulk tank customers should never have to worry about running out of fuel because our computerised top-up system automatically forecasts future fuel consumption and then delivers when needed. Also, Calor’s new telemetry system goes one step further, by automatically monitoring the level of gas in the tank and notifying Calor via automatic dial-up that a delivery is required.

Q: What are the requirements with regard to locating the bulk gas tank?

A: Dependent upon the size of bulk tank, it will be required to locate the tank a minimum distance from a building or boundary. This is 3 metres in the case of the 1200 litre tank. You will also be required to provide a concrete base for the siting of the tank. The Calor Sales Consultant will advise you on the best location, for your particular circumstances.

Q: How do I make contact with Calor, after I have purchased my ATV?

A: At the time of purchasing your ATV, the dealer will explain the Power Products Order form. This form will be forwarded to the Calor sales person, who will make an appointment with you.

Q: How long will it take to get a bulk tank on my premises?

A: It will normally take about six weeks from the date of bike purchase to install a tank at your premises.

Q: What happens if I need a new bike in less than six weeks?

A: If you need to purchase a new ATV before the six week period that it will take to install a bulk tank on your premises, we recommend that you buy a petrol ATV of your choice, which the dealer will convert to gas at its first service. For many customers the first service will be due after about six weeks.

Q: How does the performance compare to petrol ATVs?

A: There will be no perceptible difference between a gas bike and a petrol bike.

Q: Can I connect a hand pump on to my existing vapour off-take tank?

A: No. We do not recommend both vapour and liquid off-take from the same tank. Small oil deposits can form in the bottom of vapour off-take tanks. This causes no problem when vapour only is drawn from the top of the tank, but can cause problems in applications using liquid which is drawn from the bottom of the tank.

Q: Why do I have to rent the equipment? Could I purchase my own tank and hand pump?

A: A requirement exists that a liquid gas pressurised vessel and its attachments are checked by a competent person at regular intervals. Calor’s policy is to insure, inspect and maintain all of our own tanks. By maintaining ownership of the equipment, Calor discharges the customer of the responsibility of purchasing and insuring the tank and pump.

Q: Why do I have to rent the tank on the bike?

A: No charge has been made by the Honda / Yamaha dealer for your bike’s on-board tank. Again, the inspection and maintenance of this tank remains the responsibility of Calor and its Agents. Your tank will be inspected annually by your Honda / Yamaha dealer and, will be replaced at Calor’s expense, after 15 years, by your ATV dealer.

Q: The dealer has quoted me a guide price for my gas. What happens if I am already paying more or less for my gas than this guide price?

A: Calor sets prices in its markets according to various criteria, including the cost of developing that market, the cost of the equipment being used and the volume of gas that a customer is likely to use. When your Calor Sales Consultant calls to see you, he/she will assess the final cost of your installation, take into account your likely consumption, and then quote you a price based upon this.

Q: What happens to the conversion kit when I sell the ATV?

A: If the bike is sold back to the ATV dealer, the residual value may have increased. You may, therefore, wish to leave the conversion kit on the bike. Alternatively, the ATV dealer can transfer the kit to your new bike. If you choose to sell the bike to a third party, the kit will remain with the bike.

In either circumstance it is most important that you inform Calor who the new owner is by returning the tear-off slip on the bottom of the Power Products Order form that you will have signed when purchasing the bike from your ATV dealer. This will terminate the rental agreement for the on-board tank.

Q: What happens if I need to make contact with Calor?

A: The Calor salesperson will provide a list of contacts for sales, tank installation and filling. If you require any further assistance or information before our salesman has made contact with you, please call Calor free-phone number 0845 6038097.
